The below is the first work report for 56040 following it’s purchase in December 2005. Keith Bulmer (our joint Technical Officer) received a phone call from Immingham indicating that Immingham could start work on the locomotive on Tuesday 2nd May 2006 and he booked a few days off work to oversee the procedure.
Detailed and specialised work was needed on the bogies of the locomotive to replace defective and missing parts. This work could not be done at the Mid-Norfolk Railway as they have no locomotive lifting facilities. The locomotive therefore required a locomotive lift at the Immingham bogie shop to enable detailed inspection and fitment of the parts.
Three missing bolts have been replaced, traction centres were fitted and new shims were inserted on Tuesday 2nd May. Over the next days/weeks other items will be attended to.
The locomotive will then have to be partially lowered to facilitate connection of traction motor cables, fitting junction box covers and connecting dampers, air and sand pipes.
When this work is completed the body of 56040 will be lowered back onto the bogies, which will enable the lock washers and lock nuts to be fixed in place.
