Two Grid-tours announced for 2010

Pathfinder Railtours have announced plans to run two Class 56 hauled trains during 2010. The first train is the re-scheduled ‘Scenic Settler’ from Bristol to Carlisle and return. Taking place on the 22nd May, this train is expected to be hauled by a DBS Class 66 diesel locomotive from Bristol to the West Midlands and return, with a Hanson Traction / Colas Rail Class 56 diesel locomotive providing motive power from the West Midlands to Carlisle and return. The second tour on the 26th June is an out and back trip from Tame Bridge Parkway and stations via Birmingham, Cheltenham and Bristol for Cornwall and Penzance ‘Mazey Day’ celebrations. Further details will be posted on our ‘Railtours’ page when they are announced.

Pathfinder’s last ‘Grid Trip’ was on December 12th 2009 with 56312 – it’s seen at Kettering during reversal.

Scenic Settler Railtour Postponed

Pathfinder Tours have advised a change to their ‘Scenic Settler’ railtour on Tuesday 29th December – the planned motive power has now been changed from 2x Class 31s to 1x Class 56 loco provided by Hanson Traction. The tour picks up at Bristol TM, Bristol Parkway, Cam and Dursley, Cheltenham Spa, Barnt Green, Birmingham New Street, Stafford and Crewe before running to Carlisle via the Settle and Carlisle railway. Fares are availible on the Pathfinder Tours website: http://www.pathfindertours.co.uk/. Seats are still availible in all classes.

UPDATE 14TH DECEMBER – Unfortunately, Pathfinder have had to postpone this tour until 2010 due to a low number of bookings. We will update this site accordingly once a new date is announced.

No ‘Grid’ for Donnington charter

We have been informed of the following changes to Pathfinder’s forthcoming ‘Boot and Hoot’ railtour on 14th November.

Unfortunately, we have been advised by Hanson Traction that one of their two serviceable Class 56 locomotives (56311) now needs a complete power unit change after inspection of an engine fault last week. This, in effect, means that they will now not have a spare Class 56 to work our railtour this coming Saturday, as their other serviceable locomotive (56312) is tied into a long distance diagram for Colas Rail and will not be in a position to substitute. They also looked at the possibility of hiring in 56303 from RVEL, thus releasing ‘312 for our use, but this was also ruled out, as ‘303 is already on hire to a 3rd party and will not be available.

Therefore, instead of using a second ubiquitous DBS Class 66 locomotive, Hanson Traction will supply heritage Class 31 locomotive, 31190, as a direct replacement for the Class 56. One minor change is that the loco will complete its day at Stafford, rather than Birmingham International, which means arrival back at the latter will now be at 1935 (rather than 1900).
