14/12/17 – 56301 has worked the 0349 Wembley to Foxton and should work the 1228 return. 56301 is again working this duty solo and should also perform tomorrow.
No news on the 56 allocated for the Jolly Grid Railtour this weekend but watch this space.
11/12/17 – 56087 is reported on TOPS as working a 0600 Grangemouth – Rotherham Booths PS. Realtime Trains shows the working but has no reported passing times, so it’s not certain this has actually run. IF IT DOES RUN, A RETURN WORKING IS SHOWING AS 1914 DEPARTURE WITH A 07XX ARRIVAL BACK AT GRANGEMOUTH (TUESDAY).
10/12/17 – 56301 ran from Derby to Leicester, collected 47815 & 47813 and then worked a 1330 Leicester to Wembley. The 47s were being positioned to work the Barrington/Foxton train this week. A second train is expected to start at some point but traction is unspecified at this point.
09/12/17 – 56301 was summoned from Wembley to rescue 37608 which had problems in the Bletchley area whilst hauling the 5Q58Â Leicester – Ramsgate EMU move conveying a class 375Â EMU. 56301Â took the train through to Ramsgate and returned with another unit to Derby.
9/12/17 Saturday – 56303 ran as 1030 Derby RTC to Washwood Heath to collect 56091 & 56103 and return as 1330 Washwood Heath – Leicester. That will see probably the largest gathering of ‘grids’ at one location in many years.
4/12/17 – 56096 should run as 6Z07 1028 Washwood Heath – Llanwern (attached photograph courtesy of and copyright Duncan Jennings)
56301 is back at Wembley awaiting further duties. The Bow – Calvert looks like it’s not going to be 56 powered but 56301 should find gainful employment soon.
56094 & 56302 are operating the North Wales RHTT circuit .
4/12/17Â – 56128 has moved by road to Booth’s at Rotherham. 56311 & 56312 were delivered by rail to Leicester. 56303 is still active and was last reported in the North bay at Derby or at the RTC nearby.
25/11/17 – Reports elsewhere that DCR’s new owners are retaining 56303, 56091 & 56103 with 56128, 56311 & 56312 going to Booth’s scrap yard in Rotherham.
Given we’re approaching the deadline for clearance of Washwood Heath for HS2, movements should be taking place in the next couple of weeks and destinations should confirm or dispel the above info.
In the spirit of the approaching Christmas party game season, the C56G believe at least one of the above predictions is incorrect but can’t say too much at the moment. Work that one out!
A day at Bury on Monday 13th saw the defective auxiliary alternator coil replaced on 56006. The loco started first time afterwards, all three lamps on the control cubicle were lit and indicating output of all three phases was restored. A few other less serious faults remain outstanding but these should be fixed when availability of parts and labour coincide again. Hopefully this will be before Christmas, as 56006 has been allocated some ELR duties in February.
56301’s situation was made interesting with the recent announcement that all of the fleet DCR currently use (actually owned by RMS Locotec) have been put up for sale. 56091/56103/56303/56311/56312 & 56128 and a number of class 31s are all available for sale. Washwood Heath is being prepared for construction works associated with HS2 and it is believed the deadline is approaching for the site to be cleared.
A direct result was 56303 returning to Derby on Friday 10th November, leaving 56301 at Wembley. The 6Z16/6Z17 workings were reported as cancelled due to crew shortages. 56301 stood at Wembley until Tuesday 14th, before being loaned to ROG who operated the later running path to Barrington. 56301 worked the duty on Wednesday, hauling 21 bogie box wagons (1850 tonnes) and then worked the same train on the Thursday and Friday too.
56301 sat at Wembley until Wednesday 22nd when ROG used her to collect some barrier vehicles from Clapham Yard and position them at Dollands Moor, ready for the imminent delivery of Class 707 units (707013/707014).
The units were delivered to Clapham Yard during the early hours of Saturday 25th November (departing Dollands Moor at 2238 on the Friday evening).
56301 should run to Acton at some point over the weekend or Monday to take up duties on the Bow – Calvert spoil workings. The start of these anticipated workings is dependent on the availability of 56104 which is being readied for service at UKRL, Leicester. Unlike the Barrington train, 56301 can’t operate the Bow train single handed as Network Rail guidance for the route dictates that it must be 2x class 56s for the load/gradients involved.
A look at schedules for next week would indicate the trains will operate a daily pattern as follows:
2220 Bow Depot – Calvert (via Acton route)
1006 Calvert – Wembley (arr 1211) then 1553 Wembley – Bow Depot (arr 1734).
56105 ran light from Bescot and was attached to the rear of the railtour during its Stafford stop.
56303 ran light from Wembley to appear at this event which was held to raise funds for charity.
Approximately 100 persons were allowed to visit the site and the organisers had 56303, 60015, 66082 and a class 67 on display.
Unfortunately an enquiry to have 56006 attend was only made a week before the event, so it wasn’t possible. 56301 nearly accompanied 56303 (mainly to avoid splitting the often temperamental multi-working connections) but had to stay behind as there were weekend trips to and from Willesden to load up the train for Mondays working.

28/10/17 – 56096 & 56113 are currently operating this duty.
COLAS 56096 & 56105 are currently working the following duties, with 56087 based at Coleham depot presumably as a spare loco.

4/10/17 56301 & 56081 ran light from Wembley to Washwood Heath and returned almost immediately. The reason is unknown but likely to be linked to the earlier GSM-R fault on 56301 or a refueling trip for 56081.
UPDATE 3/10/17 @ 12:45PM
56301 reported as running south from Derby to Wembley (assumed to have run north as 1815 Washwood Heath – Derby on Monday evening)
UPDATE 3/10/17 – 56301 ran light engine to Washwood Heath on Monday Evening. 56303 looks like it might run from Derby to Wembley today to join 56081 for the Foxton trains.
More updates will be posted as we get them.
2/10/17 56301 will return to mainline use today when it runs light engine from Leicester UKRL to Wembley.
Originally scheduled to depart at 0900 (but currently delayed due to GSM-R issues) and arriving at 1154, 56301 will then be coupled to 56081 and the multiple working systems tested in readiness for a 0448 departure on Tuesday 2/10/17 to Foxton/Barrington, with a train weighing in excess of 2000 tonnes.
The 56s should work a week on these turns before one loco returns to Leicester for a scheduled examination. The tyre thickness on 56301 has been re-measured by UKRL and will be monitored during scheduled examinations.
Route learning took place earlier in the year (see 23/2/17 report) but although operated by DCR, the traction used since has been hired in DB Cargo class 66s.
Further to the unavailability of 56006 for the 2nd September running day, the planned repairs have not been possible due to availability of key personnel and illness.
56006 is therefore unavailable for this weekends Diesel Gala. The ELR have been informed this morning and we are greatly disappointed that our locomotive won’t be performing .
We are hopeful the repair is straightforward but the risk of causing greater damage by using the locomotive in its current condition is not one we are prepared to take.
Keith Bulmer, C56G Chairman.
Unfortunately 56006 will no longer operate the diesel turn on the 2nd September. The locomotive has developed a fault which resulted in the loss of one of the three phases on the auxiliary alternator output. This supply powers the compressors, blower motors and other essential systems on the locomotive. The technical team have been investigating and believe they know which component is defective, however further work is necessary to ensure this and also to ensure that repairs carried out would cure the problem, not just replace a part which has failed as a symptom of a deeper fault on the locomotive. Given it’s only a week to go, it isn’t going to be possible for our technical team to do the necessary work and we felt it only right to advise the ELR and everyone who might be planning on attending that 56006 will not be available.
We have a gala appearance at the ELR Autumn gala and the team are focused on getting 56006 fit for traffic for that at the end of September.
We will update when we know more.
Keith
.
Week commencing Monday 15th January – 56301 had worked the Barrington spoil trains each day last week (Monday 8th to Friday 12th January). On Friday, the return train didn’t run and 56301’s first trip on Monday should be 6T02 1128 Barrington – Wembley.
Monday 15th January – There is also a path in the system for a working to bring the first batch of Mk. 5 sleeper carriages from Dollands Moor to Polmadie. Rail Operations Group (ROG) were penciled in to do the move but traction is uncertain at this point. 56301 doesn’t look likely for the Dollands Moor leg (see above) but could be in the right place to work the WCML leg (but wouldn’t get back to work 6T01 to Barrington on Tuesday morning).
Timings for Monday 15th January are:
0945 Wembley – Dollands Moor (1203)
1334 Dollands Moor – Wembley (1605)
2306 Wembley – Polmadie CMD (1027 TUE 16th January)
Tuesday 16th January:
The long awaited move of the remaining Colas locomotives from Washwood Heath looks like it could take place as workings are timed for…
0Z56 1306 WWH – NOTTINGHAM EASTCROFT (1528) consisting of 56049, 56090, 37418 & 37521
0Z57 1750 NOTTINGHAM EASTCROFT – BARROW HILL COLAS (arr 1905) (2 x 37s as above)
0Z58 2025 BARROW HILL COLAS – WWH (2302) (unknown)
Could this be a working for 56049? Or will another Colas loco do the honours? The fact there is a light engine returning to WWH would indicate the latter option but you never know.
Locos thought to be at Washwood Heath are 56049, 56051 and 56090. TOPS also shows 66848 as out of service there too. 56051 is thought unlikely to move as its bogies are reported as being at Cardiff Canton for overhaul. Depending on timescales for clearing out WWH, this could be a future road move.
Week commencing Sun 29/10 to Sat 4/11/17:
During the week 23/10-27/10, 56081 developed a slight wheel flat and is awaiting tyre turning at nearby Wembley depot. 56303 ran light from Derby to replace 56081.
Sunday 29/10/17:
56303 had run to Knottingley on Friday 27/10 to appear at an open day there. 56303 should return at 1200 on Sunday 29/10, arriving Wembley at 1652.
Whilst 56303 is running south, 56301 will take the rake of wagons over to be loaded at Willesden Euroterminal departing Wembley at 1454 (arr 1524) and 56301 should return as 1800 Willesden – Wembley (arr 1849).
56301 & 56303 should then be paired up and run over to Acton for refueling. Departure is scheduled for 1931, arriving Acton 1955 with the pair returning from Acton at 2105 (arriving Wembley 2122).
Fully fueled 56301 & 56303 should continue daily trips to Foxton as follows:
6Z16 0433 Wembley – Foxton Exchange Sidings (arr 0716) (except Monday 30/10 when arrival is 0702)
6Z17 1228 – Foxton Exchange Sidings – Wembley (arr 1501).
Weekdays Mon 16/10 to Fri 20/10.
56301 & 56081 should continue trips to Foxton as:
6Z16 0349 Wembley – Foxton Exchange Sidings (arr 0716)
6Z17 1202 – Foxton Exchange Sidings – Wembley (arr 1431)
On Monday evening, the pair of 56s should run over to Acton. Departing Wembley at 1910 (arr Acton 1933) then returning at 2042 (arr Wembley at 2104) . Both moves are shown as light engines but a similar movement last Wednesday (11/10)Â seemed to bring back a rake of empty wagons.
31/8/17Â – The diesel leg of the Scarborough Spa Express should be worked by a Colas 56 (56302 has been stated as the loco allocated).
27/8/17 Sun- 56302Â 56094 ran to Fort William with the oil train and should return tomorrow (Mon 28/8).
Departure is 1420 from Grangemouth and arrival at Fort William yard is booked for 2134.
Return working is booked for Monday 28th August as 1331 from Fort William arriving Grangemouth at 2044 (passing Cowlairs at 1943).
21/8/17:
56302 showing on TOPS as working 6B01 Grangemouth – Riccarton which arrived at Riccarton at 0657.
